Mogorjelo (Bosnia and Herzegovina)

Weather…

Mogorjelo is one of the most significant archaeological sites in Bosnia and Herzegovina, located near the town of Čapljina along the Neretva River. It is an extensive Roman villa rustica constructed in the early 4th century over the remains of an earlier 1st-century agricultural estate. The complex served not only agricultural purposes but also functioned as a heavily fortified residence and a military outpost designed to secure vital trade routes. With its rectangular layout, distinctive corner towers, and massive stone walls, Mogorjelo strongly resembles a late Roman military fort (castellum). The ruins encompass the remains of residential buildings, agricultural facilities used for oil and wine production, and early Christian basilicas that were added after the original complex was destroyed by the Visigoths in the 5th century. Today, the site, surrounded by cypresses and pine trees, features a fascinating glimpse into ancient daily life.
