Saint James Church
Saint James Church in Medjugorje serves as the spiritual focal point for one of the world's most prominent Catholic pilgrimage sites. Construction of the current edifice began in 1934 on the foundations of an earlier, structurally unsound church, and it was eventually consecrated on January 19, 1969. The architectural style is characterized by two distinctive 25-meter-high bell towers with square bases that dominate the surrounding landscape. The town rose to global fame on June 24, 1981, when six local youths reported experiencing apparitions of the Virgin Mary. Since then, millions of pilgrims from across the globe visit annually, necessitating continuous expansion of the grounds. In 1989, a massive outdoor altar was constructed behind the church to accommodate tens of thousands of faithful during major liturgical celebrations. The church is dedicated to Saint James the Greater, the patron saint of pilgrims.
