Počitelj Fortress (Bosnia and Herzegovina)

Weather…

The Počitelj Fortress is a remarkable architectural and historic complex resting majestically on the steep karst slopes overlooking the emerald Neretva River. It was likely founded in the late 14th century by the Bosnian King Tvrtko I Kotromanić, intending to secure the valley against foreign invasions. During the 15th century, under Ottoman rule, the strategic settlement underwent massive expansion, giving Počitelj its distinctive oriental appearance. The well-preserved fortified complex consists of massive stone walls, the Gavrankapetan watchtower, steep cobblestone alleys, as well as the Šišman Ibrahim Pasha Mosque built in 1563 and an elegant clock tower (Sahat-kula). Over the centuries, control over the fortress town shifted between Bosnian kings, Hungarians, Venetians, and the Ottomans. Today, Počitelj operates as a fascinating open-air museum that is on the tentative list for UNESCO World Heritage status, serving as an inspirational haven for artists from around the globe.
