Veliki Prolog is situated in the far southeast of Split-Dalmatia County, near Vrgorac and right on the border with Bosnia and Herzegovina. The village is strategically located on a mountain pass that connects the inland plains with the Adriatic port of Ploče. It serves as the gateway to the 'Rastok' field, a highly fertile karst depression that is seasonally flooded and provides good conditions for agriculture. The village is nationwide famous for its strawberries, widely regarded as the best in Croatia due to the area's specific microclimate and rich soil. Viticulture is also a cornerstone of local life, with extensive vineyards covering the surrounding slopes, producing high-quality local wines. The village layout follows the main transit route, with traditional and modern houses perched against the limestone hills. For travelers, Veliki Prolog is a frequent stopover on the way to the coast or religious sites in nearby Herzegovina. The area features great opportunities for panoramic photography and hiking on the surrounding ridges overlooking the Neretva delta. Local cuisine features a mix of Dalmatian and continental flavors, with local cured meats (pršut) and robust wines being the regional highlights.
