Old Town Visoki (Bosnia and Herzegovina)

Weather…

The Old Town of Visoki, situated on the distinctive, pyramid-shaped Visočica hill, was the beating heart of the Bosnian state in the Middle Ages. First mentioned in a charter in 1355, this royal castle served as the main residence and political center during the reign of Ban Tvrtko I, who later became the first King of Bosnia. The fortress walls enclosed the palace district, which was protected by strictly guarded gates and massive defensive towers. From here, rulers controlled not only the important trade routes in the Bosna valley but also the diplomatic relations of the region. At the foot of the hill flourished the civilian settlement of Podvisoki, an important marketplace for merchants from Dubrovnik and other parts of Europe. Following the fall of the Bosnian Kingdom to the Ottomans in the late 15th century, the castle lost its significance and was eventually abandoned. Today, the sparse but historically invaluable ruins offer a spectacular panoramic view of the modern town of Visoko and the entire surrounding valley.
