Historic Village of Počitelj (Bosnia and Herzegovina)

Weather…

The historic village of Počitelj is a remarkable open-air museum terraced into the steep hillsides above the Neretva River. First mentioned in the 1444 charters of King Alfonso V of Aragon, the settlement evolved from a medieval fortress into a thriving Ottoman town. Following its conquest by the Ottomans in 1471, its architecture underwent significant changes, resulting in a unique symbiosis of Oriental style and Mediterranean stone construction. The dominant structure is the Šišman Ibrahim-Paša Mosque, built in 1563, which is renowned for its elegant dome and slender minaret. Additionally, the remains of the madrasa, the hammam, the Sahat-kula (clock tower), and the traditional residential houses serve as testaments to its former prosperity. Although Počitelj suffered heavy damage during the Bosnian War, comprehensive restoration efforts have allowed it to shine once again in its historical splendor.
