- It is best to visit the archaeological excavation sites of the ancient settlements early in the morning before the heat sets in.
- Be sure to try the local wines, as the region is famous for its traditional viticulture.
- A day trip towards the Georgian border has spectacular mountain panoramas, but keep your passport handy for security reasons.
- In the rural areas around the city, people often only speak Azerbaijani; a small phrasebook or translation app will be very helpful.

Ask for the house wine in small taverns, often produced according to old family traditions.
Visit the traditional kebab houses on the main street for authentic grilled meat served with fresh herbs.
At the weekly market, you will find salty regional cheese that pairs perfectly with freshly baked bread.

Tovuz lies in north-western Azerbaijan on the Tovuzchay River, about four hundred kilometres west of Baku and only fifty kilometres from the Georgian border. With around twenty thousand inhabitants, the town is an important centre of the wine industry, agriculture and archaeological research. In the nineteenth century the German colony of Traubenfeld was founded here by Swabian settlers from Württemberg, whose descendants professionalised viticulture and established sparkling-wine cellars. Today Tovuz grows grapes for renowned brands such as Tovuz-Baltic, as well as pomegranates, peaches and walnuts. In the surroundings significant traces of the Kura-Araxes culture from the fourth millennium BC have been discovered, including pottery workshops, bronze jewellery and fortified settlements. Notable sights include the modern Heydar Aliyev Centre and the Tovuz local history museum.
