Sevan-Hrazdan Cascade (Armenia)

Weather…

The Sevan-Hrazdan Cascade is a vital hydroelectric system in Armenia, comprising a chain of seven hydroelectric power stations along the Hrazdan River. This system is crucial to the country's energy infrastructure, harnessing the elevation difference between Lake Sevan and the Arax Valley. Water from Lake Sevan, the largest lake in the Caucasus, is released into the Hrazdan River, which flows through the cascade of power plants before eventually joining the Arax River. The total capacity of the complex is over 560 megawatts, making a significant contribution to Armenia's electricity generation, particularly during peak load hours. The cascade was mainly constructed during the Soviet era, between the 1930s and 1960s. However, the intensive use of the lake's water for power generation and irrigation led to a dramatic drop in Lake Sevan's water level, creating a severe ecological problem. In recent decades, considerable efforts have been made to stabilize and raise the lake's water level by constructing tunnels that divert water from other rivers.
