Saint Isaac's Cathedral (Russia)

Weather…

Saint Isaac's Cathedral in Saint Petersburg is one of the most monumental sacred structures in the world, dominating the city's skyline with its massive golden dome. The construction of this colossal Russian Orthodox church spanned over 40 years, from 1818 to 1858, and was directed by the French architect Auguste de Montferrand. The architecture stands as an outstanding example of late Neoclassicism. The main dome is particularly remarkable, covered with over 100 kilograms of pure gold leaf; during World War II, it was painted over in grey to camouflage it from enemy bombers. The interior of the cathedral is of overwhelming splendor, richly decorated with over 400 kilograms of gold, intricate mosaics, paintings, and colored marble columns, including those made of malachite and lapis lazuli. Today, the imposing building functions primarily as a museum, gives visitors a panoramic view from the colonnade observation deck, and is used for church services only on special occasions.
