Smolensk Fortress Wall (Russia)

Weather…

The Smolensk Fortress Wall, affectionately referred to as the 'Pearl Necklace of Russia', is a gigantic defensive structure of paramount national historical importance. It was constructed between 1595 and 1602 under the direction of the outstanding Russian master builder Fyodor Kon, with the primary aim of securing Russia's western border against the expanding Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. With an original total length of 6.5 kilometers, an impressive 38 massive towers, and a wall thickness of up to six meters, it ranked among the largest and most formidable fortresses in Europe of its time. The massive construction withstood numerous bitter sieges, including the devastating battles during the Polish invasion in the early 17th century, and later the assault by Napoleon's Grande Armée in 1812. Although only about half of the original walls and 17 towers survive today, the fortress still conveys an overwhelming impression of the military engineering and strategic significance of Smolensk in Russian history.
