Petrozavodsk, picturesquely situated on the shores of the huge Lake Onega, is the green and tranquil capital of the heavily forested Republic of Karelia. The city was founded in 1703 by Tsar Peter the Great, who had an iron foundry (Petrovsky zavod) built here to produce cannons and cannonballs for the Great Northern War. Today, Petrozavodsk is a relaxed university city heavily influenced by its proximity to Finland and the Finno-Ugric culture of the Karelians. The famous and elongated waterfront promenade on Lake Onega is not only the pride of the inhabitants but also houses a curious collection of contemporary sculptures donated to the city by its international sister cities. In addition, Petrozavodsk serves as the main starting point for boat trips to the world-famous museum island of Kizhi, a jewel of Russian wooden architecture.
