Vologda, picturesquely situated on the banks of the river of the same name in the Russian North, is one of the best-preserved and most pleasant historic cities in the country. Founded in 1147, the exact same year as Moscow, the city was once a major commercial center and even a candidate for the capital of the Russian Empire under Ivan the Terrible. Vologda is famous nationwide for three things: its exquisite hand-bobbin lace, its excellent butter („Vologodskoye Maslo“), and its unique wooden architecture. The streets of the city are lined with beautifully carved, pastel-colored 19th-century wooden houses that convey a feeling of coziness and a fairy-tale atmosphere. The architectural center is the white Vologda Kremlin with the majestic St. Sophia Cathedral and its widely visible bell tower.
