Kastsyukovichy, located in the far eastern reaches of Belarus along the Russian border, is a city whose destiny is inextricably linked to the wealth of the earth and modern heavy industry. Originally a traditional agricultural trading center, the city was catapulted to national prominence in the late 20th century with the construction of the Belarusian Cement Plant (BCK). This gigantic facility, one of the largest of its kind in Europe, dictates not only the local economy but the entire architectural and demographic landscape of the city. Tragically, the city's history is also marked by disaster: it is located in one of the regions most severely affected by radioactive fallout from the 1986 Chernobyl disaster. Despite this lingering legacy, the city is resolutely forward-looking today, expanding with new residential districts and continuously modernizing its infrastructure.
