The Dormition Cathedral in Smolensk is a monumental masterpiece of Russian Baroque architecture, perched majestically on Cathedral Hill overlooking the Dnieper River. Constructed between 1677 and 1772, it was built on the site of an earlier 12th-century cathedral that was destroyed during the Polish siege. The structure is distinguished by its animated blue facade with white decorative trim and five prominent green domes. The interior is world-renowned for its wide-open five-tier gilded iconostasis, which stands nearly 30 meters tall and is considered one of the most magnificent in Russia. It famously housed the holy Icon of the Mother of God of Smolensk, one of the most venerated relics in the Orthodox world and the spiritual protector of the city. Miraculously, the cathedral remained largely unharmed during the devastating battles of 1812 and World War II, despite the near-total destruction of the surrounding city. Today, it stands as the principal spiritual center of the region and a testament to Smolensk's enduring historical resilience.
