💡 Tips
- The drive up is scenic but narrow and winding; take it slow and be prepared to yield to oncoming traffic.
- Explore the narrow, steep cobblestone streets on foot, but wear sturdy, flat walking shoes.
- Listen to the local Gorani language, a unique Slavic dialect distinct from Albanian and Serbian.
- There are no major ATMs here, so bring enough cash from Dragash or Prizren.
🍽 Food
The local Gorani people are famous bakers. Look for traditional sweet shops in the village center selling baklava and tulumba.
A traditional baked pastry filled with cheese, spinach, or meat. Ask for it at local cafes or guesthouses.
A fermented, slightly tangy drink made from corn or wheat, traditionally crafted by Gorani masters.
🛍 Shopping · 🧘 Quiet spots
Older women in the village often knit thick woolen socks and sweaters; ask around to purchase directly from them.
Fresh, unpasteurized sheep's milk cheese from the high pastures can sometimes be bought directly from shepherds.
Walk upstream along the fast-flowing Brod river, leaving the village noises behind.
Hike up the steep slopes immediately behind the houses for a panoramic, silent view of the stone rooftops.

Brod is a remote village in the southernmost tip of Kosovo, near the border with North Macedonia. It is the cultural center of the Gorani, a Slavic-speaking Muslim minority. The village's architecture is remarkable: tightly packed stone houses with red tiled roofs cling to the steep slopes of the Sharr Mountains, giving the impression that time has stood still. The surroundings offer some of the most untouched natural landscapes in the Balkans. Demanding hikes start from the village into the high mountains, past glacial lakes and deep canyons. The Arxhena Resort is located nearby, serving as a base for skiers in winter and mountaineers in summer. Its isolation guarantees an authentic experience far from mass tourism. Culturally, Brod is known for its deep-rooted traditions. The inhabitants preserve their own language and customs, particularly evident in their music and colorful folk costumes. Donkeys are still often seen as a means of transport in the narrow alleys. Local sheep cheese and traditional bread from wood-fired ovens are staples of daily life and a highlight for visitors. Visitors reach Brod via the town of Dragaš. The road is narrow and winding but gives spectacular views of the pristine nature. The best time to visit is summer for hiking or mid-winter for adventure sports. A visit to Brod is like a journey into the past of the rural Balkans.
