Saint Jovan Bigorski Monastery (North Macedonia)

Weather…

Saint Jovan Bigorski Monastery is one of the most significant Orthodox monasteries in the Balkans, situated in the pretty Radika River valley. Founded in 1020 by the monk Jovan, it is dedicated to Saint John the Baptist. The monastery's name derives from 'bigor,' the local limestone tuff used in its construction, which gives the buildings their unique sandy-colored appearance and historical texture. The monastery is globally famous for its magnificent wood-carved iconostasis, completed in the early 19th century by the masters of the Mijak school. This intricate masterpiece features thousands of tiny biblical scenes and human figures, carved with such precision that it is considered one of the finest examples of ecclesiastical woodcarving in the world. Another highlight is the miraculous icon of John the Baptist, which is believed to possess healing powers and has survived several fires over the centuries. Today, the monastery remains an active brotherhood of monks known for their hospitality and spiritual guidance. The complex features traditional Balkan architecture with beautiful wooden balconies and stone-paved courtyards overlooking the surrounding mountains. Located along the scenic road between Mavrovo and Debar, it serves as both a major pilgrimage site and a cultural treasure of North Macedonia, offering a serene atmosphere for all visitors.
