Grezhdan Castle (Albania)

Weather…

Grezhdan Castle, located in the Dibër region, is one of the largest Late Antique fortifications in the Western Balkans. Covering an expansive area of approximately 34 hectares, the fortress was likely constructed in the 4th century AD, during the reign of Constantine the Great or Justinian I. Its massive defensive walls, stretching over 2,000 meters in length, were originally reinforced with 18 large towers and several monumental gates. Due to its significant size and strategic positioning, Grezhdan is interpreted by historians as a major military city that served as a logistical hub and a secure base for Roman legions on the border between the provinces of Epirus Nova and Dardania. Archaeological findings indicate the fortress was intensively used until the 6th century, when it was eventually abandoned following Slavic incursions. While parts of the ruins are now overgrown, the monumental scale of the walls still conveys the importance of this strategic bastion, representing a prime example of Late Roman military engineering.
