Dragash, also known as Sharr, is the southernmost municipality in Kosovo, situated within the majestic Sharr Mountains at the borders of North Macedonia and Albania. The region is characterized by its rugged alpine landscape, with peaks exceeding 2,500 meters in height, providing a sanctuary for diverse flora and fauna. Historically, the area is home to the Gorani people, a Slavic-speaking Muslim ethnic group, alongside Albanians, resulting in a unique cultural blend evident in local dialects and customs. The local economy has traditionally relied on extensive sheep herding and the production of the renowned Sharr cheese, though sustainable ecotourism is increasingly becoming a vital economic pillar. Due to its geographic isolation in the high altitudes, the region has preserved centuries-old traditions, folklore, and artisanal crafts that have disappeared elsewhere. Today, Dragash serves as a primary gateway to the Sharr National Park, attracting mountaineers and nature enthusiasts to one of the Balkan Peninsula's most significant ecological protected areas.
