Borje is a remote mountain village in the Kukës County of northeastern Albania, situated on the slopes of the Koritnik Mountain within the Shishtavec region. Part of the Kukës municipality, it lies very close to the border with Kosovo. Borje is primarily known for its cultural distinctiveness, as its inhabitants belong to the Gorani community, a Slavic-speaking Muslim minority with a rich heritage of folklore, traditional music, and crafts. The geographic setting at over 1,300 meters above sea level dictates the local lifestyle, with potato farming and sheep herding on alpine pastures serving as the main economic pillars. Historically, the village was an important stop on ancient trade routes connecting Prizren with the Albanian hinterland. The architecture in Borje features traditional stone houses and narrow alleys designed to withstand the region's harsh winters. In recent years, the village has drawn interest from hikers and ethno-tourists attracted by its pristine natural surroundings and the unique Gorani hospitality. Borje stands as a testament to the cultural diversity and resilience of mountain communities in the Balkan borderlands.
