Kukës is a city in northeastern Albania, renowned for its spectacular mountain scenery and its significant recent history. The current city, often called New Kukës, was built in the 1970s after the original settlement was flooded by the construction of the Fierza dam on the Drin River. Kukës gained worldwide attention during the Kosovo War in 1999 when the city hosted approximately 450,000 refugees, leading to its nomination for the Nobel Peace Prize, the first city ever to receive such a nomination. Geographically, Kukës is situated at the confluence of the White and Black Drin rivers and is dominated by the impressive Mount Gjallica. The region is rich in natural resources and has great potential for mining and ecological tourism. The city's economy is characterized by services, agriculture, and cross-border trade with Kosovo. Despite its isolation in the Albanian Alps, Kukës remains a symbol of human solidarity and national strength.
