Bogovinje Lake (North Macedonia)

Weather…

Bogovinje Lake is the largest glacial lake in the Šar Mountains of northwestern North Macedonia. It is situated at an elevation of 1936 meters above sea level in a deep cirque below the Borislavec and Mala Smreka peaks. Covering an area of approximately 1.5 hectares with a maximum depth of over two meters, it stands as a significant hydrographic landmark in the region. The lake's water is crystal clear and feeds the Bogovinska Reka, which flows down toward the Polog Valley. Its surroundings are characterized by alpine meadows and sparse high-altitude vegetation adapted to extreme weather conditions. During the summer months, the lake serves as a crucial watering hole for livestock, while in winter, it freezes over completely. Geomorphologically, the lake is evidence of Pleistocene glaciation in the Balkans and provides scientists with vital data regarding climatic history.
