Cantanhez Forest

The Cantanhez Forest in the far south of Guinea-Bissau is the nation's last remaining contiguous area of primary tropical rainforest. Located in the Tombali region near the border with Guinea-Conakry, this forest is a critical refuge for West African biodiversity. Its vegetation is characterized by towering emergent trees, dense networks of lianas, and an immense variety of epiphytes. Cantanhez is internationally renowned for its population of Western Chimpanzees, which coexist within a unique cultural landscape protected by the local Nalú and Balanta ethnic groups through a system of sacred groves. This community-based conservation model is exemplary, dividing the forest into zones where traditional agriculture and strict protection overlap. In addition to primates, the forest supports rare antelope species, forest elephants, and an extraordinary diversity of birdlife. The ecological significance of Cantanhez also lies in its role as a climate regulator and water catchment area for the country's southern reaches. Despite its status as a national park, the forest remains threatened by logging and the expansion of commercial plantations, making its preservation one of Guinea-Bissau's most urgent environmental challenges.
