Fulacunda is a historical town in southern Guinea-Bissau and the headquarters of its eponymous sector in the Quinara Region. The town is situated in an ecologically valuable zone near the Cufada Lagoons National Park, the country's largest freshwater reservoir. Geographically, the region is characterized by dense forests, extensive mangrove swamps, and numerous waterways connecting the interior to the Atlantic Ocean. During the colonial era, Fulacunda was a significant post for the trade of natural products and enslaved people, a past reflected today in some remaining architectural structures. The local population primarily consists of the Biafada and Mandinka ethnic groups, whose livelihoods are closely tied to agriculture and fishing. During the struggle for independence in the 1960s, Fulacunda was a fiercely contested territory between Portuguese forces and the PAIGC. Despite infrastructure challenges, the town remains a key hub for ecotourism development in the south of the country. Preserving the surrounding wetlands is of critical importance for regional biodiversity.
