Cufada Lagoon (Guinea-Bissau)

Weather…

Lagoa de Cufada is the largest natural freshwater lake in Guinea-Bissau and the centerpiece of the Cufada Lagoons National Park in the Quínara region. This wetland of international importance (Ramsar site) represents a critical ecosystem in a coastal region otherwise heavily influenced by tides and saltwater. The lagoon is fed by several tributaries and serves as a vital drinking water reservoir for the surrounding fauna and human settlements. The vegetation around the lake is a complex fabric of dense gallery forests, palm savannas, and reed beds that host enormous biodiversity. The lagoon is particularly significant as a refuge for endangered animal species such as the western chimpanzee and various species of crocodiles. For ornithologists, Cufada is a paradise, providing a nesting and resting site for over 200 bird species, including pelicans and rare herons. The lagoon's ecological stability regulates the microclimate of the entire region and protects the hinterland from soil salinization. Despite its protected status, Cufada faces challenges from agricultural use within its catchment area, making the preservation of this unique freshwater refuge a national priority.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
The lagoon is located south of the Geba River and is best reached via the roads heading towards Buba. The journey mostly requires a 4x4 vehicle, and boat trips can easily be arranged locally to penetrate deep into the wetland.
📅
Best season
The drier months from December to May are absolutely good for visiting and engaging in birdwatching. During the heavy rainy season, the water area expands significantly, often making land access extremely difficult or impossible.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The landscape is an extensive, flat mixture of freshwater lagoons, dense mangroves, and lush gallery forests. Exploring on foot along the immediate shores is only possible to a very limited extent due to the highly swampy ground.
🎒
What to bring
A good camera equipped with a telephoto lens and binoculars are obligatory for nature lovers visiting this wetland. Wear long-sleeved, lightweight clothing as essential protection against the strong sun and abundant insects.
🅿️
Parking
Visitors typically park their vehicles in the adjacent small villages, from where the guided boat tours usually commence. Parking lots in a formal sense do not exist; one simply relies on friendly arrangements with the locals.
⚠️
Safety
Because this rich ecosystem also hosts crocodiles and hippos, swimming is strictly and absolutely prohibited. Always follow the explicit instructions of your boat guide and do not touch the plants or the water unprompted.
⏱️
Time needed
An excursion to the Cufada Lagoon usually takes up a full day, particularly due to the often lengthy and bumpy approach routes. The actual ride on the peaceful water generally takes a relaxing two to three hours.
