Water temperature…
Tabankulu lies in the northeastern Lubombo District, embedded in a region known for citrus and sugar cane cultivation. The settlement is part of the large irrigation network fed by the Komati River, developed since the 1970s into Eswatini's largest citrus orchard area. On the plantations around Tabankulu, oranges, mandarins and grapefruits of such high quality are grown that they are exported to Europe, the Middle East and Asia. The town itself is small, with workers' housing estates, schools, a clinic and a central sports field. Geographically Tabankulu sits in the hot Lowveld at about 250 meters elevation; in summer temperatures often rise above 38 degrees Celsius, so harvesting is frequently done in the early morning. Economically the town also benefits from its position on the Lubombo Corridor connecting Eswatini with Mozambique and South Africa, providing an important export route. Culturally the region remains very traditional, with royal homesteads (umphakatsi) in the surrounding villages and festive occasions such as the Marula Festival. The Lubombo Mountains to the east also offer attractive hiking opportunities.
