Lomahasha is the northeasternmost settlement of Eswatini and lies right on the border with Mozambique in the Lubombo District. It hosts an important border crossing that connects Eswatini with the Mozambican town of Namaacha and onward to Maputo. Lomahasha thus plays a key role in cross-border trade, especially for food, fuel and consumer goods carried in both directions. The town sits on a slightly elevated plateau in the Lubombo Mountains, which gives it a pleasantly milder climate than the hot surrounding Lowveld. Historically Lomahasha was an important trading post, serving as a link between British Eswatini and Portuguese Mozambique during the colonial era. This cultural blending is still visible today: many residents speak Portuguese or Shangaan in addition to siSwati. Economically the residents' lives and work rest on subsistence farming, small-scale trade and cross-border logistics. Touristically the nearby Lubombo Conservancy Areas with the Mlawula Nature Reserve, the Mhlumeni-Bordeaux corridor and hiking trails in the Lubombo Mountains, home to endemic plants and rare birds, are of great interest.
