Mpaka is a small but strategically vital town in the eastern Lubombo District, known since the 1960s primarily for its coal mining. The Mpaka mine, once operated by the Anglo American Corporation, produced high-quality anthracite coal mostly destined for export. Although mining has scaled back, the town remains a crucial railway junction: it sits on the main line between Matsapha and Maputo (Mozambique), giving Mpaka a key role in freight transport, especially for sugar, coal and industrial goods. The nearby King Mswati III International Airport in Sikhuphe, opened in 2014, has further raised the region's profile, even if the airport remains commercially under-utilized. The town itself is a mix of traditional Swazi residential areas, former mining townships and new business properties. The climate is the typical hot, dry Lowveld type. Mpaka is also close to important natural attractions such as Hlane Royal National Park, known for its elephants and lions, and the Mlawula Nature Reserve on the western edge of the Lubombo Mountains.
