Rondspring is a small, rural settlement in the Lubombo District whose name derives from an unusual circular spring (round spring) that is centrally important for water supply for people and livestock in the dry season. The region lies in the dry Lowveld at around 250 meters elevation and is characterized by acacia savanna, marula trees and low bush. Economically Rondspring rests mainly on cattle ranching: the hardy African Nguni breed has been raised here for generations and forms the backbone of the local economy. Maize, sorghum and a few vegetable crops are also grown in small amounts, often as dry-land farming dependent on irregular summer rainfall. The climate is hot and semi-arid, with summer highs above 38 degrees and mild, dry winters. Residents organize themselves into traditional chieftaincies (umphakatsi), where the local chief coordinates land distribution and cultural occasions. In recent years small irrigation schemes and solar pumps have been introduced in Rondspring to improve living conditions. Touristically the proximity to Hlane Royal National Park, with its elephants, lions and rich birdlife, is of great interest.
