Malindza is a growing community in the Lubombo District, about 70 kilometers east of Manzini, and is rapidly gaining importance thanks to its proximity to King Mswati III International Airport at Sikhuphe. For decades the region was sparsely populated and used mainly for extensive cattle ranching and maize farming. With the opening of the international airport in 2014, however, structural change began: new housing estates, logistics centers and small industries are now emerging around Malindza. Malindza also hosts one of the country's largest refugee centers, the Malindza Refugee Reception Centre, which mainly accommodates refugees from the DR Congo, Burundi and Somalia. The climate is hot Lowveld with summer highs above 38 degrees and mild, dry winters. The landscape is shaped by acacia savanna, marula trees and scattered granite inselbergs. Economically the airport is complemented by the nearby Mpaka, Maputo railway. Tourism is focused mainly on the nearby Hlane Royal National Park and the Mlawula Nature Reserve. Malindza thus represents an Eswatini in transition: balanced between traditional rural life and the hope of modern development brought by air travel and international connectivity.
