💡 Tips

  • Take time to enjoy the spectacular views from the Lubombo Mountains across the lowveld toward Mozambique.
  • Siteki is a good rest stop for refueling and snacks before crossing the border at Mhlumeni/Goba.
  • Pack a light jacket; the altitude makes Siteki noticeably cooler and breezier than the surrounding plains.
  • The local market is a great place to find unique handicrafts specific to the Lubombo plateau region.
  • Be prepared for sudden mist or fog, which can significantly reduce visibility while driving in the mountains.

Siteki is the administrative capital of the Lubombo District and sits picturesquely on a high plateau of the Lubombo Mountains at around 600 meters elevation. The siSwati name literally means 'place of marriage' and dates back to the 19th century, when King Mbandzeni granted his warriors permission to marry their brides here. The town later developed as a British colonial administrative post and today, with about 6,000 inhabitants, is a quiet but significant administrative and educational center. Its elevated position above the Lowveld provides a pleasantly cool climate and spectacular views over the sugar cane fields and the Hlane National Park lowlands. Siteki is well known for the Nyanga School of Traditional Medicine, one of the few institutionalized schools for traditional healers (sangomas) in the region. The Lubombo Mountains themselves are part of Eswatini's rich biosphere and harbor rare bird species such as the bearded vulture, as well as endemic reptiles. Siteki is also an important gateway to the nearby Mlawula and Hlane reserves and to the Lomahasha border crossing into Mozambique. The town thus uniquely combines traditional healing culture, colonial heritage and modern administrative functions.
