Vuvulane Community Farms (Eswatini)

Weather…

Vuvulane Community Farms represents a pioneering model for smallholder agriculture and land reform in Eswatini. Founded in 1962 by the Commonwealth Development Corporation, the goal was to integrate local farmers into the sugar industry through access to irrigated land and technical know-how. The settlement consists of hundreds of individual plots where farmers independently grow sugar cane for the nearby mills of Mhlume and Simunye. Vuvulane has developed into a strong community with its own marketing structures and social facilities. Despite political and economic challenges, the project remains a symbol of empowerment for local communities and food sovereignty. In addition to sugar cane, the farms also produce vegetables and fruit for self-sufficiency and local markets. The cooperative organization enables farmers to access credit and modern agricultural equipment that would often be unaffordable for individuals. The farms are an important example of the transformation of agricultural structure from large-scale industrial plantations to diversified smallholder farms.
