Tjaneni lies in the northeastern Lubombo District in the sunny Lowveld and is one of Eswatini's most important agricultural settlements. The small town grew in the 1960s around the TSGC (Tongaat Sugar Group) and the later Royal Swaziland Sugar Corporation, which established here one of the region's largest, continuously expanding plantations. Today thousands of hectares of sugar cane and citrus orchards stretch around Tjaneni, fed by a dense network of irrigation canals drawing water from the Komati River and the Maguga Dam to the north. The climate is hot and semi-arid; summer temperatures often climb to 38 to 40 degrees Celsius. Tjaneni's economic significance reaches far beyond Eswatini, as the citrus fruits and raw sugar produced here account for a substantial share of the kingdom's exports. The town's social life revolves around the Tambankulu Country Club, which provides sports and leisure facilities for plantation workers and their families. Nearby are also important wildlife reserves such as Hlane Royal National Park, Mlawula Nature Reserve and Mbuluzi Game Reserve. Tjaneni thus exemplifies the link between industrial agriculture, conservation and quality of community life.
