Simunye Sugar Estate (Eswatini)

Weather…

The Simunye Sugar Estate in northeastern Eswatini is one of the country's most technologically advanced agricultural projects and part of the Royal Swaziland Sugar Corporation (RSSC). Founded in the late 1970s, the estate was officially inaugurated in 1980 by King Sobhuza II. It comprises an integrated value chain from vast sugar cane plantations to a state-of-the-art sugar mill and an ethanol plant. Field irrigation is ensured by the Mnjoli Dam, built specifically for this project on the Black Mbuluzi River. Simunye, which means 'we are one' in the local language, functions as a self-contained community with its own infrastructure, residential areas, and social services for thousands of employees. The estate places great emphasis on ecological sustainability and uses waste products from sugar production to generate energy. Simunye's productivity contributes significantly to Eswatini being one of the most cost-effective sugar producers worldwide. The facility also serves as a center for training specialized agricultural engineers and technicians.
