Simunye, whose name means 'We are one' in siSwati, is a planned industrial town in the Lubombo District, established in the early 1980s to house workers at the nearby Simunye Sugar Mill. The mill, like the one at Mhlume, belongs to the Royal Eswatini Sugar Corporation and is regarded as one of Africa's most modern sugar refineries. The town itself is notable for its thoughtful urban planning, with well-kept residential areas, schools, a country club with a golf course and even its own clinic, which sets it apart from the surrounding rural areas. Geographically Simunye lies in the Lowveld at around 200 meters elevation and is surrounded by vast sugar cane fields fed by the Komati and Lusutfu irrigation systems. The climate brings hot, humid summers and mild, dry winters. Nearby is the Mbuluzi Game Reserve, a private wildlife sanctuary with giraffes, zebras and antelope, easily accessible from Simunye. Simunye embodies the close intertwining of industry, agriculture and community life that defines the economic model of eastern Eswatini.
