Mhlume Sugar Cultivation (Eswatini)

Weather…

Mhlume Sugar Cultivation in the northern Lowveld is one of the oldest and most significant sites for the sugar industry in Eswatini. The project was initiated as early as 1958 as a joint venture between the Commonwealth Development Corporation and the colonial administration of that time. Today, Mhlume belongs to the Royal Swaziland Sugar Corporation (RSSC) and operates one of Africa's most efficient sugar mills. The plantations are irrigated through a complex canal system that draws water from the Komati River and the Maguga Dam. The region is characterized by extremely high average temperatures that accelerate sugar cane growth and lead to high sucrose levels. Mhlume is also a pioneer in integrating small-scale outgrower schemes, which massively promote rural development. In addition to the mill, the industrial infrastructure includes research stations for soil science and pest control. By diversifying products, such as different sugar grades for industrial use, Mhlume ensures its competitiveness on the global market. The company's social commitment is reflected in comprehensive housing and healthcare programs for the local population.
