Mlawula Forest
The Mlawula Nature Reserve lies at the transition between the low-lying Lowveld and the Lubombo Mountains in eastern Eswatini. This unique geographical positioning results in extraordinary ecological diversity within a relatively small area, ranging from dry acacia savannas to moist gallery forests in the ravines. Spanning 18,000 hectares, the reserve protects rare plant communities, particularly the dense Ironwood forests found along the slopes of the Lubombo range. Here, the Mlawula and Mbuluzi rivers converge, carving deep gorges into the volcanic rhyolite landscape. Mlawula is renowned for hosting over 350 bird species and a vast array of reptiles and amphibians thriving in its varied micro-habitats. Archaeological evidence within the reserve indicates human habitation dating back to the Stone Age, lending the area significant historical value. Visitors can explore the landscape via numerous hiking trails that wind through the Siphiso Valley to spectacular viewpoints. The reserve's protected status ensures the survival of numerous endemic species found nowhere else in Eswatini.
