Aluminij Mostar (Bosnia and Herzegovina)

Weather…

The aluminum plant in Mostar, known as Aluminij Mostar, was once the largest company in Herzegovina and the absolute leader in exports for Bosnia and Herzegovina. Founded in 1975, the factory utilized the massive electricity capacities of the hydroelectric power plants on the Neretva River for decades to produce high-quality raw aluminum and various alloys. In its peak times, the plant produced up to 130,000 tons of metal annually, which was supplied to global automobile manufacturers and the aviation industry. After years of financial difficulties and enormous unpaid electricity bills, operations had to be temporarily suspended in 2019, representing a severe economic blow to the region. Meanwhile, the foundry has been restarted by Israeli-Chinese investors of the M.T. Abraham Group, who specialize in melting aluminum scrap and producing ingots.

📋 Practical info

🏭
What is this place?
Aluminij Mostar represents a cornerstone of the regional economy in Herzegovina and stands as a major international exporter of raw aluminum. The massive industrial enterprise has historically been one of the most significant drivers of employment and heavy manufacturing in the area.
🚪
Visiting
Because of the hazardous nature of smelting and heavy metallurgy, the operational areas of the factory are strictly closed to the general public. Curious visitors are generally restricted to viewing the monumental exterior structures and sprawling facilities from a safe distance outside the gates.
👀
Where to view it
Excellent panoramic views of the extensive industrial complex can be caught while driving along the main roads situated south of Mostar's city center. The surrounding elevated terrain sometimes provides striking vantage points over the massive factory halls and tall chimneys.
🧺
Local products
The output consists of raw industrial aluminum and commercial alloys, meaning there are no consumer goods or souvenirs available for direct purchase by tourists. However, the economic impact of this production is deeply woven into the local commercial fabric of Mostar.
📆
Active season
Industrial smelting processes typically operate relentlessly day and night, 365 days a year, creating a continuous hive of activity regardless of the tourist season. The highest volume of transport trucks moving heavy materials occurs on regular weekdays during standard business hours.
Nearby
It makes sense to combine a brief look at this monumental industrial site with a comprehensive tour of the famous Stari Most bridge and the historic Ottoman core of Mostar. Travelers heading towards the nearby Dervish monastery in Blagaj will pass very close to the factory area.
