Blagaj Fortress
Blagaj Fortress, also known as Stjepan-grad, towers on a high karst cliff above the source of the Buna River in Herzegovina. The site has been inhabited since ancient times, with the Romans building a fortress known as Bona on the foundations of an earlier Illyrian settlement. In the 15th century, it became the strategic seat of Duke Stjepan Vukčić Kosača, from whose title the name Herzegovina is derived. The fortress features massive perimeter walls that are up to 10 meters high, along with the remains of a palace, a cistern, and a chapel. It fell to the Ottoman Empire in 1466 and remained in use as a garrison until the 19th century. Today, the ruins represent one of the most important medieval military structures in Bosnia and Herzegovina, offering a commanding view of the Mostar valley.
