Bišćević House (Bosnia and Herzegovina)

Weather…

The Bišćević House, also known as the Turkish House, is one of the best-preserved examples of Ottoman-era residential architecture in Mostar. Built in 1635 on the eastern bank of the Neretva River, the house is famous for its prominent upper floor that cantilevers over the riverbed, supported by high stone pillars. This architectural design allowed for natural ventilation and provided spectacular views of the Neretva. The interior has remained almost entirely in its original state, furnished with authentic carpets, divans, and intricately carved wooden furniture. The cobbled courtyard is enclosed by high walls to ensure family privacy and offer a cool refuge during the intense Herzegovinian summers. Today, the house serves as a museum, providing visitors with a fascinating glimpse into the domestic lifestyle of a wealthy merchant family during the 17th-century Ottoman period.
