Orlovača Cave
Orlovača Cave, located near Pale and close to Sarajevo, is one of the most significant speleological sites in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The cave system spans a total length of approximately 2,500 meters, of which about 560 meters are accessible to tourists. The cave is characterized by an extraordinary variety of dripstone formations, including stalactites, stalagmites, and delicate calcite sinter. Scientific research has confirmed that the cave was once a habitat for the extinct cave bear (Ursus spelaeus), with skeletal remains found here dating back more than 16,000 years. The internal temperature remains constant year-round at approximately 8.8 degrees Celsius, with humidity levels near 100 percent. In addition to paleontological finds, Neolithic remains have been discovered, indicating a very early human presence in the area. The cave was officially opened to tourism in 2002, featuring well-maintained paths and modern lighting. The surrounding area in the Romanija Mountains features pretty hiking trails and a rich variety of flora and fauna.
