The Sarajevo Stock Exchange (Sarajevska Berza - SASE) is the undisputed epicenter of the capital market in the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Founded in 2001 by a group of banks and brokerage houses, the exchange is located in one of the modern business towers in the financial heart of the capital. In the 2000s, the SASE played a crucial, historic role in implementing the privatization process, during which shares in former state-owned enterprises were transferred to citizens and investors. The most important leading index, the SASX-10, tracks the performance of the country's ten largest and most liquid companies, including telecommunications companies, energy providers, and pharmaceutical corporations (such as Bosnalijek). Although the market is small and often illiquid by European comparison, the stock exchange remains the most important barometer for the economic health and investment climate of the region.
