Vraca Memorial Park (Bosnia and Herzegovina)

Weather…

The Vraca Memorial Park is one of the most profound historical sites in Sarajevo, bearing impressive witness to the sacrifices the city made during World War II. The complex is located on the slopes of Mount Trebević in the southern part of the city and was cleverly integrated into and around an abandoned 19th-century Austro-Hungarian fortress. Designed by Vladimir Dobrović and officially opened in 1981, the park covers almost 80,000 square meters. Engraved on massive granite walls are the names of over 11,000 residents of Sarajevo, resistance fighters, partisans, and innocent civilians, who fell victim to fascist terror between 1941 and 1945. The fortress itself, where hundreds of people were executed, serves as the central memorial. Tragically, the complex suffered severe destruction from artillery fire during the Siege of Sarajevo (1992-1996), as it was used as a military base due to its elevated position. Today, the park is gradually being restored and remains a powerful place of remembrance.
