The Igman mountain range is located southwest of Sarajevo, reaching its highest point at 1502 meters on Crni vrh. The area gained international fame during the 1984 Winter Olympics as the venue for ski jumping and Nordic combined events. Today, the abandoned ski jumps and the Olympic podium stand as haunting reminders of its sporting past. The dense pine forests provide exceptionally clean air, making it a natural health retreat for those with respiratory issues. In winter, Igman is a hub for cross-country skiing and sledding, while summer months attract hikers and mountain bikers to its many marked trails. Its proximity to the capital makes it a great day-trip destination for locals and tourists alike. Historically, the mountain is also significant for its role during the Siege of Sarajevo, being located near the entrance of the war tunnel. Visitors should stop by the local mountain huts to sample authentic regional food, such as fresh sheep cheese and slow-roasted meats. The drive from Sarajevo takes about 35-40 minutes on well-maintained roads. The best time to visit for hiking is from May to September, while January and February offer the most reliable snow conditions for winter sports.
