Sarajevo, the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina, is positioned in a valley of the Dinaric Alps along the Miljacka River. The city is globally recognized for its religious and cultural diversity, earning it the nickname 'Jerusalem of Europe' as mosques, churches, and synagogues stand in close proximity. Historically, the city gained infamy as the site of the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand in 1914, which triggered World War I. In recent history, Sarajevo endured the longest siege in modern warfare between 1992 and 1996. Despite this, the city has evolved into an animated cultural hub that hosts the prestigious Sarajevo Film Festival annually. The Ottoman-era old town, Baščaršija, with its iconic Sebilj fountain, remains the heart of the city's tourism. Sarajevo was also the host city for the 1984 Winter Olympics, the remains of which are still visible in the surrounding mountains.
