Trnovo Old Town (Bosnia and Herzegovina)

Weather…

The Old Town of Trnovo has a long history as a vital crossroads between Sarajevo and the Herzegovinian coast. During the Middle Ages, the settlement was positioned along a strategic route that facilitated the trade of salt and textiles from Dubrovnik. In the Ottoman era, Trnovo evolved into a regional hub for crafts and agriculture, aided by the abundant water resources of the Željeznica River. The region's architecture was long defined by traditional Bosnian stone houses and small mosques, many of which were lost to various conflicts over the centuries. The 19th century brought significant development as the Austro-Hungarian administration modernized the road networks passing through the area. Despite suffering heavy damage during 20th-century conflicts, Trnovo retains traces of its heritage in the form of medieval tombstones (Stećci) and ancient foundations. The town's history is deeply intertwined with the surrounding Treskavica and Bjelašnica mountains, which provided both refuge and resources for generations.
