The Skakavac Waterfall, with a height of approximately 98 meters, is one of the highest and most spectacular waterfalls in the Balkans. It is located about 12 kilometers north of Sarajevo in the Ozren mountain range and is fed by the Perački creek. The surrounding area of about 1,430 hectares was designated a monument of nature due to its immense ecological significance. The landscape features dense stands of spruce, fir, and beech, hosting a wide variety of endemic plant species. During the spring thaw, the waterfall becomes particularly powerful, while in winter, it often freezes into a massive, shimmering column of ice. Geologically, the area consists of limestone and dolomite, which formed the sheer vertical cliff over which the water plunges. The waterfall is accessible via well-marked hiking trails that wind through pristine nature. It serves as a major destination for eco-tourism and plays a vital role in preserving biological corridors near the Bosnian capital.
