Blagaj (Bosnia and Herzegovina)

Weather…

Blagaj is one of the most spiritual and photographed locations in Bosnia and Herzegovina, famous for its 16th-century Dervish monastery (Tekija). Built around 1520, the monastery is a masterpiece of Ottoman architecture, seamlessly integrated into its natural surroundings. It sits directly at the foot of a massive 200-meter vertical cliff, right next to the cave where the Buna River emerges. The white-walled building with dark wooden details creates a striking contrast with the deep blue water and the gray limestone rock. Inside the Tekija, visitors can tour the prayer rooms, the guest house (Musafirhana), and the tombs of revered Dervishes. The site exudes a sense of deep tranquility and mysticism that has attracted pilgrims for centuries. Perched high above the monastery are the ruins of the Old Town of Blagaj (Stjepan-grad), the former seat of the Dukes of Herzegovina. The hike to the fortress provides a sweeping panoramic view over the entire Buna valley toward Mostar. Several riverside restaurants with terraces overhanging the water serve fresh trout, which is a local specialty. Due to the ice-cold spring water, the air in Blagaj remains significantly cooler than in nearby Mostar, making it a popular escape during the intense summer heat. The site is a short 15-minute drive from Mostar. When entering the monastery, visitors must adhere to a modest dress code, though headscarves and long skirts are provided at the entrance.
