Radimlja Necropolis (Bosnia and Herzegovina)

Weather…

The Radimlja necropolis is undoubtedly the most famous and most richly decorated site of medieval stećci (monumental tombstones) in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Located three kilometers west of Stolac, it contains a total of 133 of these monolithic monuments, dating predominantly from the 15th and 16th centuries. The stećci hold extraordinary historical and artistic value and are distinguished by their deep reliefs depicting floral motifs, geometric symbols, circular dances (kolo), hunting scenes, and weaponry. A particularly famous and often reproduced motif is the figure of a man with his right hand raised, interpreted as a gesture of greeting or a symbolic oath. Serving as the burial ground for the noble Hrabren-Miloradović family, Radimlja is an outstanding example of specific medieval Bosnian funerary art and was added to the UNESCO World Heritage list in 2016.
