Stolac is arguably one of the oldest and architecturally most valuable cities in all of Herzegovina, beautifully situated within the valley of the emerald-green Bregava River. The city is a veritable open-air museum where the profound influences of prehistoric, ancient, Ottoman, and Austro-Hungarian epochs breathtakingly merge. Just a few kilometers away lie the massive ruins of the Illyrian megalithic city of Daorson, frequently referred to as the "Mycenae of the Balkans," as well as the world-famous Radimlja necropolis, which houses what is likely the country's most renowned and intricately decorated collection of medieval tombstones (stećci). The warm Mediterranean climate of the region is absolutely convenient for lush pomegranates, figs, and olive trees. Stolac further captivates visitors with its appealing old watermills, easy on the eye Ottoman stone bridges spanning the Bregava, and the ancient Vidoški fort towering high above the town, making it an absolute must-see for dedicated cultural travelers.
