Kreuzenstein Castle
Located near Leobendorf, Kreuzenstein Castle is a striking example of a "show castle" that blends genuine medieval ruins with the romantic architectural ideals of the late 19th century. The original medieval structure was demolished by Swedish forces in 1645 during the Thirty Years' War, remaining in ruins until Count Johann Nepomuk Wilczek began its extraordinary reconstruction in 1874. A polar explorer and patron of the arts, Wilczek gathered original medieval building components, known as spolia, from all over Europe to create a romanticized version of a fortress. This architectural collage includes ancient stone carvings, portals, and windows, making it one of the most visually authentic-looking castles in the region. It houses a vast collection of historical weaponry and armor, as well as an intricately furnished knight's hall and a massive medieval kitchen. Beyond its historical appeal, Kreuzenstein is world-renowned as a filming location for international movies and series, including "The Witcher" and "The Three Musketeers." The castle grounds are also home to the Adlerwarte falconry center, where visitors can witness spectacular flight demonstrations by eagles and falcons. Its hilltop position features commanding views across the Danube Valley towards Vienna, serving as a testament to the Wilczek family's dedication to preserving the spirit of the Middle Ages.
